On May 17, 2018 Governor Mark Dayton signed the athletic trainer licensing bill into state law. The Minnesota Board of Medical Practice will continue to be the agency that regulates the state's athletic trainers, but regulation will now be done at the licensing level as of July 1, 2018. All current registrants will automatically convert to licensing, provided they have completed their registration renewal by June 30, 2018 and will not incur any additional fees.
The Board of Medical Practice will not issue new licensing wallet cards or certificates until the next renewal cycle in 2019 but will allow individuals to request a duplicate card or certificate that will indicate the credential as a license. Individuals interested in obtaining new proof of license can request it from the Board of Medical Practice through this form after July 1, 2018. All verifications to other agencies will document the credential as a license after July 1, 2018.
Information on the licensing process for new applicants in Minnesota, which includes a criminal background check, is available on the Board of Medical Practice website. Individuals who apply on or after July 1, 2018 will need to submit a fee and fingerprint-based study.
Remember to renew your registration (soon to be license) by June 30, 2018!
